To my friends in yoga, I have been waiting for the right moment to share my life experience in the last year, and now the timing feels right…please read on.
“This past year has been the most amazing year of my life.”
Dr. David Simon, Co-founder of The Chopra Center
Sixteen months ago, Deepak Chopra’s dear friend and colleague Dr. David Simon was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor. The irony of this shocking news is that he, himself is a neurologist. After grazing the side of a parked car, Dr. Simon realized he was missing vision on one side and immediately arranged for his own brain scan. The outcome of this test has proven to be the source of much growth, grief and healing for the whole Chopra community.
Having been studying with Deepak and David for a year now, I just returned from another awe-inspiring week with these two pioneers in mind-body medicine. I have spent the last year witnessing David’s family struggle through this most challenging time, but this time he said something he’s never said before.
While sharing his perspective on life now, he actually reported that the last year of his life has been the best year ever! For a world renowned scholar who can no longer read, write or walk independently, this is a puzzling albeit fairly common report from people with a terminal diagnosis. He claims that having to simply receive support and love from his family has transformed his relationships and led to even deeper connections.
Personally speaking, this journey elicits in me an equal mix of difficulty and inspiration, as I grieve for his life and the reality of life’s nature. On the flip side, I am deeply inspired by his continued dedication to service, as he is soon to complete another book on spiritual awakening.
What strikes the deepest chord in me is witnessing David conduct himself with a profound sense of presence and peace. Much of his time teaching now is spent consoling and helping others come to terms with his death! This is surely the sign of a true healer.
Dr. David Simon has given me a stronger passion than ever to share the ancient teachings of healing that I have been blessed to receive. Beginning this month, I will be offering brand new programs to complement the exceptional classes at our studios, helping to awaken our own healing intelligence and well of inner peace.
This month, I invite you to stop postponing the use of your gifts of peace and happiness, as you wait for a day when life improves. We can all follow Dr. Simon’s lead and choose to see each moment as an opportunity to gratefully give and receive love.
Thank you all for contributing to the love in my life, may you feel its return!
