A Message From Jenny

Each year, as September approaches, I am reminded of my 30 years of conditioned training to prepare for a new school year. For many of us, September brings a sense of new beginnings, like an unofficial new year.

As you re-enter your workplace this month, wherever that may be, I invite you to pay attention to the words you speak. And as you focus your awareness on what you speak, you’ll become increasingly aware of the nature of conversation all around you.

This practice of observing the quality of our words is something I’ve engaged in long before I began my yoga practice, having been brought up by a mother who rarely spoke negatively about anyone and defended the victims of gossip.

Although it occurs less frequently now, I still notice how quickly a conversation can slide into a downward spiral to complaint and criticism. And as yogis, we are called to uphold goodness; in thought, action and of course, speech.

An easy way to evaluate the quality of your words is to ask yourself two questions:

If the person being spoken about was present, would s/he feel the magic of yoga through you?
Would you (or have you) brought your concerns to the person directly?

I don’t deny that sometimes relationships can be stressful, but in tough situations we can be intentional about how we deal with them and seek proper counsel.

When I’ve shared something that isn’t aligned with my values, I say a short prayer to release what I cannot take back and return my focus to my dedication to spreading light—which can be done in a simple greeting.

In India, many people greet strangers with “Hey Radha” or “Hi Krishna”, who are divine symbols of universal love that streams throughout humanity. Most of us are familiar with Namaste, which acknowledges the seed of light that shines in each of us.

Next time you notice a conversation going south, try pausing and be still for a bit. Breathe deeply to reconnect to your essence of light and follow with a mindful response.

This fundraising event is in support of the Empathy Factory's effort to create a generation of generous and conscientious humanitarians by sharing the ideals of self-compassion and care. Join Michelle for a 108 minute practice that pulls together the teachings of yoga and the power of living with empathy. In yoga the number 108 has many special meanings – among them is: Pranayama: Enlightenment is promised to one who is able to find such a state of calm that he or she only breathes 108 breaths in a day.
