May was another
exciting month for Breathing Space, having hosted our graduation ceremony for
our largest graduating class to date. I feel infinitely blessed that we
continue to attract incredibly talented and caring people to our programs,
thanks to all of you for enriching our lives!
With our weather finally changing, I am enjoying observing people’s attitudes
and priorities shifting into the warm weather mentality.
As we literally start gearing down to decrease the pace of our lives, it is a
perfect time to do the same with our minds. Imagine giving your thinking mind
permission to rest under a shady tree for an afternoon?
I was recently given very valuable instructions from my teacher at puppy
school. One night (okay, she’s like this every night), Sita was frenetically
jumping three feet in the air trying to lick another dog owner’s cheek. The
teacher came over, took the leash and stood very, very still. Within seconds
my wild social butterfly landed on all four paws and then slowly dropped her
bum into a seated position.
My jaw dropped, and I got the message loud and clear before she even spoke
the words “When your dog is out of control with excitement, you must be as
still as a tree.”
This advice is not only superb for a stressed out puppy owner, but it’s also
exactly what we do when we sit in meditation. While our minds jump around in
a thousand different directions, our work is to stand very, very still like a
tree and wait for the mind to catch on to the change of pace.
Eventually it does, although many people quit their meditation session just
as the mind is ready to surrender with exhaustion. It’s sometimes on minute
28 of our 30 minute session, when the mind finally gives in to our higher
intention of being still and present.
This summer, I hope you can find pockets of time to devote to doing nothing
at all, where you can stand as still as a tree and let your mind settle long
enough to savor the sweetness of the summer season.
And if you’re wondering how Sita’s coming along, Blair no longer threatens to
put her on Kijiji so we’re making progress.
